In this feature for The Radio Times I assessed the on-going issue of the best boxers being kept apart by big business and big broadcasters.
I recently spent two weeks on a work experience placement with Radio Times, helping their web team. It was a great experience. I got to see a lot of my copy published on the site, gain an insight into how their team works and even interview Peaky Blinders star, Sam Neill.
Here’s a screenshot summary of some of my previous contributions to The National Student. I was their Sports Editor and briefly edited the Tech section too.
Tommy Philbin’s story is a gruelling one. Having been hospitalised with depression, he’s now worked his way back to fitness and is living the life of a professional fighter.
Ross Murray had the biggest win of his career back in May. He didn’t just beat his opponent, he also beat the expectations placed on him as an older fighter and picked up his first pro title at 37-years-old.
I had the opportunity to conduct a Q&A with rising amateur star Caroline Dubois earlier this year. Caroline is one to watch and will make waves both at the Olympics and as a pro when she turns over.
Here’s my latest article, a piece for 5W Football, discussing what could be a turbulent upcoming transfer window for Manchester United.
5W encourage long-form writing and it was great to dig up some statistics and cover United’s transfer difficulties in depth. I enjoyed looking at potential replacements for big-name players. Let’s see if Ole agrees with any of my picks…
In the last few week’s I’ve started hosting and editing the SouthpawJab.com podcast. It’s been great fun but there’s been a learning curve too.
The show features interviews with boxers and promoters as well as reviews and previews of matches, big and small. We always examine a betting angle for the week’s boxing at the end of the show too.
The pod is available through Apple podcasts, Anchor, the Southpaw Jab site and via a variety of other podcast providers.
In these latest articles, I’ve covered more boxing but also had the opportunity to write for a new site, Boxing Insider. I got the opportunity to review a set of Corner ‘punch trackers’ for them which was an interesting chance to mix boxing with technology writing and reviewing.
