Radio Times

I recently spent two weeks on a work experience placement with Radio Times, helping their web team. It was a great experience. I got to see a lot of my copy published on the site, gain an insight into how their team works and even interview Peaky Blinders star, Sam Neill.

EUTV Sports Producer

During my final year at Edinburgh University, I undertook a role with the University television channel as their Sports Producer. Here is a selection of videos we released during my tenure.

This video isn’t perfect but I learnt a lot from producing it and it was popular on Facebook at the time of release. Last minute pull-outs from crew members meant I directed, filmed, interviewed and edited with no assistance. That was really useful in helping me get to grips with editing software and every stage of the production process.

EUTV Drama: Tell Me

In my last year at Edinburgh University I entered a screenplay competition with the university television channel (EUTV) which resulted in the making of two-part drama Tell Me.

Writing drama for the screen was an amazing learning curve and an enjoyable, as well as stressful, experience. Balancing the needs of the story with the needs of the cast, crew and director was a challenge that kept me gripped.

Tell Me is a long way from perfect but, as a first effort at writing drama, I’m proud of it. The cast and crew did amazingly and we all learnt on the job together.

We tried to discuss mental health in our drama as it was then, and remains, hugely topical, especially among students. Edinburgh University particularly has been highlighted as a university with mental health issues among the student population.

I believe writing drama for the screen has helped me to become a more adaptable and creative writer.

Diverse journalistic experiences with The National Student

I’ve always enjoyed contributing to The National Student (TNS). Having been both their sports and tech editor, at different stages, I have a lot of experience of working alongside the TNS team and catering to their readership. The fantastic thing about writing for TNS was the wide variety of opportunities to write on different subjects.

I’ve written for TNS on everything from Buddhist robots to golf, via a live review of rap pioneers, The Sugarhill Gang. It’s made me a better writer and, importantly, a more flexible writer. Here is a selection of pieces on varying subjects that I have written for TNS…
